As many of you know, veganism, or the practice of not eating any products that come directly from the source of animals or are animal-made products. For example, milk, which from cows, or eggs, that come from chickens, are strictly prohibited in a vegan diet. However, much controversy is stirred when this topic is talked about, as some argue that veganism is pointless, while others strongly believe the effects of veganism strive to create a better community. In this article, we'll dive into the goods and bads surrounding a vegan diet, and truly understanding whether the switch should be made.


What's So Good About A Vegan Diet?

One of the main reasons people switch to a vegan diet is due to the increase of nutrients and decrease of junk-food consumption. You see, fast-food is constantly created with oils, meats, and carbs that all come from an animal source. Whether it be from beef-tallow, or from your ordinary Chick-fil-a chicken sandwich, most of the items on a fast-food menu are consisting of animal products. When you switch to a vegan diet, your dependence of such nutrients come from healthier sources, such as wheat, vegetables, beans, peas, and more. This change in dietary restrictions not only promotes healthy eating, but it includes more necessary nutrients for a healthier lifestyle.


Not only will you benefit from a healthier life-style, but switching to a vegan diet can ultimately lead to a reduction in the chances of diseases. According to the article HealthLine, "this may explain why a 2017 study found that vegans may benefit from a 15% lower risk of developing cancer." By switching to a vegan diet, you are consistently eating more a plant-based diet, which is rich in nutrients and less harmful for your digestive system. Red meat and other processed meats contain ingredients that can pose harmful health conditions, but because a vegan diet doesn't have any meat, the repercussions can be ignored.


Why are Vegan Diets Bad?

The first concern many people have about vegan diets are the cost of such ingredients. While it may seem like the right decision to switch to healthier items, the cost of these organic ingredients can quickly add up. For the average human, it's more convenient to purchase frozen or lower quality vegetables to help save money and reduce the cost of groceries. Due to inflation and the rising rate of poverty, it's hard to keep families to switch to a vegan diet.


Additionally, by endorsing in a vegan diet, your risk for neurologic and hematologic problems increase. For the people who don't know what those are, it basically means your chance of blood-related and nervous systems diseases/disorders increase. You might ask, Why? Well, as meat is one of the the biggest protein sources in the current industry, it contains a vital nutrients for the human body, which is B12. Plants currently don't have any source of this vitamin unless it is somehow artificially integrated. As vegans don't indulge in meat products, their ability to intake this nutrient, and is scientifically linked to cause an increase in certain diseases.

While this was just a brief introduction to many different types of diets, these aren't ones you have to abide to. For example, other diets exist; pescatarians are those who practice veganism with the exception of fish. Many diets exist with different substitutions and varieties. Find what is right for you and stick to it! There's never anything wrong with switching back to different diets as your body is yours! Listen to your body and understand what it needs to thrive!
