Hyperthymesia - Super memory

The brain is the most complex organ of a Human being. It controls each and every activity of a human starting from the senses we feel to the way we carry ourselves. Apart from the physical appearance, it is the brain's thought process that makes each individual unique.

The brain as the storage house of memory plays a crucial role in maintaining and managing it. Whatever we study, learn, see, and feel, every emotion is stored in the brain. However, the brain stores all this information in the form of long-term memory and short-term memory. Dividing the things we do, feel each day accordingly.

Most of the time people tend to forget a few day-to-day things, especially students tend to forget what they learned after a while. Each time an individual tends to forget a certain thing or when a student forgets what they studied they crave for memory where they don't forget anything and remember each and everything that happens in their life.

SUPER MEMORY

Hyperthymesia is a rare condition where one remembers every happening of their life not only images and memories but also the sounds, emotions, and smells. It is known as highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM). Just mentioning the time or day the person can list out each and everything that happened on that particular date and time like a live recorder. Though Hyperthymesia sounds tempting like a superpower or boom in reality it's a curse in disguise of boom.

Just like any other individual people with Hyperthymesia will also process short-term but the accuracy of each memory is highly accurate which is unlike others and this tends to improve over time in short they become permanently stored in the brain. As the individual starts to age, their accuracy over the memories also improves. This is due to hyperactivity of certain parts of the brain.

CAUSES

Cases of Hyperthymesia are very few and there is very little research being done. But there are very theories regarding it, suggesting Hyperthymesia might be due to genetic, biological, or physiological factors. No matter what theories might suggest, to know the actual facts more research has to be done in depth.

In certain research, they have noticed that there is a structural difference in some parts of the brain in people with Hyperthymesia which is unlike the typical brain of an individual. Diagnosis is done by MRI, electroencephalograms, and also a memory test like autobiographical memory assessment is carried out.

Sometimes Hyperthymesia is confused with Eidetic memory, which is the ability to recall an image with exact accuracy after seeing it for a short period but hyperthymesia is something superior to it as it makes you remember the emotions you felt and the words you used and makes you relive that moment.

BOOM OR CURSE?

Hyperthymesia isn't accompanied by any sort of physical side effect or complications instead whatever burden or pressure you feel is mental exhaustion.

Though it sounds cool to remember every happening of life and recalling your good moments again and again and having remember everything you study without any difficulty feels good, what about the sadness, and worry you felt when something went wrong? There is no way you can throw it out of your brain, it is going to remain forever just the way you remember your happy moments and emotions the same thing is going to happen with your bad memories too. Forgiving someone for something they did is your ability but forgetting what they did to you is certainly out of the question, as it is impossible. Mental exhaustion happens when you are loaded with memories it interrupts your day-to-day tasks. Remembering what you eat and wear every day, will slowly make lose interest in things, and remembering the way people behaved with you makes it difficult to develop trust in people.
